- Summer Camp
- Children's Exploration Series
- Before-and-After School Care for La Canada Summer School Students
Summer Camp
Beginning on June 23, 2008, this full day, 10 week camp will be offered at 2 locations:
- Our Caltech site (250 & 256 Michigan, Pasadena) and
- Oak Grove site (140 Foothill Boulevard, La Canada).
Both locations serve children entering 1st through 7th grade. Families may apply for the full summer or for weekly sessions. The hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the following schedules offered:
- 5 days a week,
- 3 days a week - Mon, Wed, Fri,
- 2 days a week - Tues, Thurs
Summer Camp 2008 is designed to be relaxing, recreational and tailored for the interests of school-age children. Our curriculum features a rich range of daily activities, long-term projects, special events, field trips and a unique science component that are stimulating and discovery-oriented. Creative arts and crafts include fabric dying, weaving, paper mache and clay. Integrated arts opportunities feature exploration of creative expression through writing, music and drama. Field trips to destinations such as the Imax Theater, the Butterfly Pavilion, the Natural History Museum, bowling, ice skating, tours of JPL & Caltech and more are designed to be fun and educational. Outdoor physical activities include swimming, water play, gardening, organized sports and games. Our specialized science component involves demonstrations of basic concepts and related activities providing children the opportunity to hypothesize, investigate, perform experiments and document their findings.
“The Zone”
Once again, we will offer "The Zone" for older children enrolled in our Summer Camp. These specialized activities (such as trips to the beach and roller skating) for children entering grades 5 through 7 focus on the interests of this age group and allow them time to connect with their peers. In addition to the weekly activities, we will be offering a one-week camp (August 11-15) specifically for children entering 5th, 6th and 7th grades. This camp will be held at La Canada Elementary’s campus and will officially operate from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended care available from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m. provided free of charge. This camp will focus on activities and events that appeal to older children, and will involve a variety of field trips and special activities. There will also be an emphasis on community service and exploring the local community.
Children's Exploration Series
This year, the CEC will offer three one-week camps open to children entering 1st through 7th grades. Families can sign up for one or all of the camps, depending on their children’s interests.
- Science Explore (August 4-8) This messy, slimy, creative science camp will allow children to experiment to their hearts content! The focus of this camp will be pure experimentation and fun. Special guests will visit to conduct unique demonstrations and we will be able to make potions and messy activities all day long!
- Animal Explore (August 11-15) If your child loves animals, then this camp is for them. Primarily geared to younger children, special activities will include a trip to a local vet and the Humane Society, as well as many animal visitors. Each child will also study an animal they would like to learn more about, and work on special animal related projects throughout the week.
- Art Explore (August 18-22) Join us as we explore a variety of art media. We will tour local art museums and create beautiful art projects to show throughout the week culminating in an art gallery at the end of the week. This week of exploration will focus on open ended art experiences in a relaxed and fun environment.
