Parent Participation

As a nonprofit organization, the CEC requires contributions of money and time from a variety of sources outside of program fees to sustain the service that it provides. First and foremost, we rely upon our population of parents, the chief adult beneficiaries of our service, to provide our basic foundation of support.

It is the general consensus of a succession of Boards of Trustees that the mandatory requirement of Infant-Toddler and Preschool parents to provide service to the organization, results in the following benefits:

  • An increased awareness of and positive involvement in the program that contributes, in part, to ensuring the success and continued quality of the program
  • Identification and utilization of skills of parents with specific talents which would otherwise be unobtainable or expensive to acquire
  • Increased satisfaction on the part of parents because of their involvement
  • A reduction in program costs and thus tuition rates
  • A strengthening of the community atmosphere of the program through a fostering of mutual knowledge and appreciation among CEC members

Getting Started

The Infant-Toddler and Preschool Programs, and the Cooperative Preschool at Caltech require parent participation hours. The number of hours is per family and is determined by what program your child is enrolled in and if it's full- or part-time. Families have the entire program year to complete their hours and are notified of opportunities in the electronic communications or in the rooms. Hours are divided into three categories: Work Day, Fund Development, and Miscellaneous. For more details, please review the Giving Guide and the FAQs.

The School-Age Program does not require Parent Participation hours. However, oftentimes we utilize special skills parents may have to showcase them to the School-Age Program children or in the Summer Exploration Camps.

Communication

At the CEC, we believe that open communication is the foundation of a harmonious child care program. Please make use of our willingness to listen by communicating your needs and concerns as they arise. Each of your child's Lead Teachers and all the Directors are the persons directly responsible for the operation of the CEC and have the training and experience to answer your questions and solve any problems that may arise. Because we truly care about your concerns for your children, we have found that when such concerns arise, a scheduled conference time works best for sharing between parent and teacher. If you desire a conference, please schedule one with your child's teacher. Additionally, you may request a Director's presence. Or, if the need arises, you may schedule a conference with a Director alone. We are here to meet your needs concerning you and your children. Please don't hesitate to make use of our services.

In addition, the CEC regularly communicates with parents through emails. The Infant-Toddler and Preschool Programs as well as the Cooperative Preschool at Caltech receive the THIS WEEK bulletin every Tuesday. The School-Age Program families receive a monthly e-newsletter the first Wednesday of every month.

In addition, for parents in the Infant-Toddler and Preschool Programs, there are also routinely scheduled Parent Meetings and Discussions which allow parents the opportunity to learn more about child development and the curriculum occurring in their child’s room, as well as gathering together with other parents to talk about children’s issues. These are scheduled in advance of each program year and can be found in the Master Calendar.
